Aim, structure and tasks of the organization
- The Social Insurance Institution’s main tasks are determined by the law of 13 October 1998 on social insurance system. The Institution also has other additional tasks in the field of social security.
The Social Insurance Institution carries out its activities through the Head Office, 51 Branch Offices, 214 Inspectorates and 66 Local Offices.
The Social Insurance Institution main tasks are:
- granting and payment of pensions, sickness allowances, maternity allowances, rehabilitation benefits, care allowances, compensatory allowances, nursing allowances, funeral grants,
- calculating and collecting contributions to:
the Social Insurance Fund
the second funded pension pillar (compulsory) and transferring it to open pension funds
the health insurance and transferring it to the National Health Fund (NFZ)
the Labour Fund and transfers it to the Ministry of Social Affairs
the Guaranteed Employee Benefits Fund
ZUS is the competent and liaison institution for implementation of international agreements and treaties on social insurance.
The scope of the Social Insurance Institution activities makes it one of the biggest public institutions in Poland. It associates functions of the finance institution (contribution collection, benefits payment, and tax collection on behalf of pensioners) with functions of the institution that brings its customers (beneficiaries and contribution payers) safety connected with reliable accomplishment of social missions commissioned to the Institution.
