Aim, structure and tasks of the organization
- The vdek are the controlling organisations of the twelve employee and worker substitute health funds, which have about 25 million insured in all of Germany during the year 2002. The vdek was founded in Eisenach in 1912 as the "Association of registered relief funds". The vdek headquarter is based in Berlin. There are 17 additional representation offices at the Länder and in one case also at regional level. An adequate presence of the Ersatzkassen corresponding to the federal structure of Germany. Amongst all carriers of statutory health insurance the Ersatzkassen set a special priority to the principles of freedom of choice, competition, self-determination and administrational self-government as key-features of non-profit health insurance in Germany. Individuality and solidarity, in other words the art of subtly blending the individual members freedom of decision-making with his or her efficient and reliable social integration, has remained the cornerstone of our philosophy and of that of our member organisations activities.
