ESIP maps national practices

New forms of work, especially platform work, have an increasing economic impact. However, uncertainties remain regarding the legal status of platform workers. Consequently, new forms of work could challenge the traditional conception of social security.

In order to assess the extent of this challenge, ESIP’s Pensions Committee produced a mapping of the social security coverage of platform workers across Europe. This comparative mapping covers statutory pension insurance in twelve European countries. From the results of this mapping, it appears that in most countries, platform workers fall under the self-employed category. Yet there is no uniformity in terms of coverage. Overall, it does appear that some good solutions already exist at national level.

The real world impact of these practices as well as the inclusion of other social security branches could enlighten this first mapping exercise. Therefore, ESIP is in the process of setting a working group to explore further this issue.
